francesca woodman's retrospective opens in march at the guggenheim here in nyc. the show began its tour at the sf moma in november. i'm eagerly awaiting the opening.
to tide me and you over, friend, photographer, artist, elli chung has created a beautiful little homage to woodman. she's posted her images over at her blog, paris and other places.
i rode my bike up to inwood park in the bronx a couple of weeks ago to make pictures of kids clearing out invasive plants for grownyc. it was an incredibly hot day and the kids, park service and i were tromping around in the brush pulling up a very garlic-y smelling invasive. well, the kids were pulling, i was picturing. while we were leaving the site, a man i had seen on the walk in -- making mandala-like creations out of leaves and flowers on the ground -- was still there. he was sitting on a log near his flower-leaf mandala reading & writing, like some sort of urban forest gnome. i stopped to say hi & asked if i could make his portrait. he was very excited and said yes. while we were talking i asked him if he knew of andy goldsworthy. he smiled and said yes -- i'm sure he gets that all the time.
after making his portrait, he wrote his email on a piece of paper and the words "search = young jee feeds woodpecker in his hand." he told me that he had a relationship with a particular woodpecker in the park & he had been visiting her and feeding her from his hand for four years. i half completely believed him and half completely didnt. i actually did the search later that day & saw this. kind of magical.
